 Middle School is a time when students start navigating classes taught by different teachers, have sometimes transferred to a new school, and are trying to figure out their locker and backpack. Then, there’s sports and relationships. Parents begin handing over more of the responsibility for a student’s schedule, class choices, and grades. 

What we offer:

Study skills: students learn how to manage a calendar, set goals, and organize assignments. They also 

learn how to apply these skills to other areas (like making their bed, organizing their room, and 

identifying their learning styles and aptitudes).

Partnering with parents: Parents find it helpful to have someone who can come alongside and encourage 

their son or daughter, a mentor outside the family who confirms strategies and celebrates successes. Many parents find it helpful to have someone else “on the same team.” 

Content: Wheeler Enterprises offers support in ELA (English and Language Arts), math, science, PSATs, languages (French, Latin, Spanish). We help students prepare for quizzes and tests, and we help shore up gaps in learning.

Some examples: 

One student was struggling with writing. When he sat with a blank sheet of paper and pencil, he literally began shaking. He didn’t know where to begin. He did, however, love to play the drums and dreamed of playing in a band. In fact, he was practicing nearly every night. Writing to him had to be perfect. It was something he did only for school assignments, and he felt like it had to be perfect. We began talking about song lyrics, and I encouraged him to keep a journal that no one would see. He could even tear up what he had written later. Soon, he was writing for five minutes 3-4 times a week, then longer, and after a few weeks his writing flowed beautifully, and we began fine tuning the sentence structure, storytelling, and grammar. A few years later I saw a taller kid in the grocery store wearing a t-shirt with a popular rock band emblazoned on it. He recognized me. His band was doing well, and he was writing, for school and for himself.
